March 13th

I passed through Fort Sumner today. This town was at 4800 ft and seemed to be a growing town, no old falling-down buildings and a lot of cars passing through. I sat on a wall and enjoyed my lunch 1 mile away from where they say Billy the Kid was buried. There were signs 5 miles away all the way up to it. Well, I ran 27 miles with a 30 mile head wind. I cut more of my shoe away and it felt better. We moved our accommodations ahead again to Clovis, New Mexico. I finished 51 miles short of Clovis. Today.I am taking care of my feet as instructed by Russell (Ran across America 71 days) He said it won't happen over night, but it will work. Everything he said has come true, even though I had hoped he was wrong on a few things. It looks like I will be about 5 miles short of Texas on the 15. So I will be well into Texas on Wednesday. The last town Vaughn, NM has only one hamburger joint and no other place to eat, no grocery store....nothing. This town now has everything but a Jack in the Box. Cold today, didn't wear coat and froze.

Well, 35 mile head wind again today, cold drizzle. I had a nice shoulder on the road but lots of trucks. Cut more of my shoe and it felt best yet. Foot hangs over rubber sole both sides. Only hurts first 5 miles then doesn't hurt much at all, goes rather numb. I have a lot of  pain tolerance left in me, don't worry. We have a grocery store in town now so I can eat healthy. Not going to weigh myself until I get to Texas. Another 27 mile run today stopped me short of Clovis, NM.

March 15th

I am going to name this run "The Murphy's Law Run: If it can go wrong, it will". The only thing that is really going as planned is the miles that I finish everyday ,and that's all that matters, I guess. Well today was one of the toughest yet. I only ran 25 miles today as I made it to Clovis, New Mexico. I never ran in 6 inches of wet snow and a 35 mph head wind. The snow was 8 inches where the plows pushed the snow on the shoulder. My leg muscles were on fire and it was like running in deep, wet sand. I ran 25 in 6:45 min. I thought that was a good time for today and my feet were getting iced all day, so that had to help with swelling. I hope tomorrow is different, as I will be into Texas, where they closed down Interstate 40 ! I ran 1092 mile so far. I will weigh myself tomorrow, I know I lost more.

A good friend of mine, Wayne Stevens sent E-Mail that read "We are all proud of you back home, and that pain is just weakness leaving your body. Well I had a lot of weakness leaving my body today. Be cool Wayneo

Bruce Has Made it to Texas!

Well today started with everything.  First there was ice, then I had to run in snow 4 inches deep for  6 miles. As soon as I hit Texas, the road was fairly dry. I ran through Bovina, Texas and I am about 20 miles into Texas now. Its funny, as happy as you are to get to another state, you are even more happy to leave it. Just means your movin on! The first half of New Mexico was beautiful, the second half was a whole other world, dry, dead, snow, rain, Blahhh. Route 60 into Texas has a 9 ft shoulder and no snow on it at this time. Light, double lane traffic and everyone moves over. I was still dead from yesterday, legs felt like lead today. Still ran 27 miles in 7 hours and that includes an on the road interview with a reporter from Farwell, Texas who just happened to be driving by and read my shirt. My training partner, Susan, (nickname HUGGIE BEAR), sent me my phone today, so I have a phone again,Yeaaaaah!! I am sure her hurt knee is coming along and she will be back to running 24 miles a day again soon! Thanks Sues!

March 17th

Finished today's 27 mile run in Hereford, Texas. I will probably finish close to Canyon, Texas tomorrow. I will be running through busy Amarillo on Saturday and Sunday. Swollen feet went down some, but still can't bend toes yet. Running in freezing temperatures has helped and cutting shoes more and more has also helped. I don't have a cell phone again as the new one had a battery life of 4 minutes. As of Mar 17, I have run for 45 days straight, 1146 miles.

March 18th

I ran 27 miles to fall just short of Canyon ,Texas. We decided to stay in Canyon for one night as not to drive through Amarillo only once. I dread tomorrow's run. We had no internet in Canyon.

March 19th

Well it was a rough run through Amarillo today, but 27 miles got me past it. I ran for miles not knowing if I was going the right way, but it all worked out and I made it just the other side of Amarillo. Now I only have to worry about Tulsa, the last big city we will hit. I have ran exactly 1200 miles now. It adds up quick at 108 miles every 4 days. Texas is flat and looks like Illinois right now. Farm fields and silos, nothing to look at. I haven't run with my camera since middle of New Mexico, all the same scenery, Blahhh. We moved our accommodations ahead to Pampa, Tx. We will stay here until I run far past, 53 miles back to start tomorrow. but I should be here in two days.
